Tom Yum Khaa North Thai Version of Tom Yum

I have tried repeatedly to make Tom Yum Soup it is one of my favorite soups. I finally got it right with this version. It does have Coconut Milk which makes it a northern Thai version.

Tom Yum Khaa

Sweet, Sour and Spicy delicious complex soup

Ingredients

  • 1 tbsp

    unrefined coconut oil unrefined coconut oil

  • 3 cloves garlic
  • 2 Thai Birds eye peppers preferably red Thai Birds eye peppers preferably red
  • 2 tbsp Galangal ( not ginger does not result in same taste)
  • 5 kaffir Lime Leaves
  • 2 tbsp sweet dark soy sauce
  • 1/4 cup lime juice
  • 8 oz shiitake or cremini mushrooms
  • 1 tbsp agave or rock sugar
  • 1 cup coconut milk
  • 5 cups vegetable broth
  • 1 large tomato, diced
  • 1 tbsp ground corriander
  • 1 tbsp fish sauce
  • cilantro and green onions to garnish

Instructions

  • Sautee the lemon grass in coconut oil 3-5 minutes until fragrant
  • Use mortal and pestle to grind garlic thai peppers and galangal into paste
  • Add and cook 3 more minutes
  • Add vegetable broth, coconut milk, tomato, soy sauce lime leaves, mushrooms, fish sauce and coriander
  • Simmer for 30 minutes
  • Add lime juice and agave
  • Garnish with cilantro and green onions
  • If you want to add shrimp, chicken or pork feel free with chicken slice thin and add early with Shrimp add late so as not to overlook
